29 May 2026

The website of the Institute of Sociology of the NAS of Ukraine has published an analytical material by S. S. Dembitskyi, Doctor of Sociological Sciences, "The reburial of Andrii Melnyk: quantitative and qualitative findings of a study"

In May 2026 the remains of Andrii Melnyk, head of the Melnykite wing of the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists in 1938–1964, were brought from Luxembourg to Kyiv and reburied at the National Military Memorial Cemetery. This is a figure whose discussion throughout the 20th century generated conflict as part of the formation of the discourses of Ukrainian historical memory. In 2026 the question no longer activates controversy for the majority. Not because respondents know the biography in detail, but because the frame within which such an event is placed has symbolically become shared by most of the population.
