Before the war 57% of Ukrainians were fatalists, and now only 27%

The Director of the Institute of Sociology of the NAS of Ukraine, Doctor of Philosophical Sciences, Professor Yevhen Golovakha gave an interview to Maksym Vikhrov, editor-in-chief of the outlet «Ukrainskyi Tyzhden».

The journalist's main questions to the scholar were as follows:

– Have Ukrainians begun to forget about the war?

– What new divisions have appeared in our society?

– Is Ukraine threatened by authoritarianism?

– Is it possible to reintegrate the residents of the territories occupied since 2014?

– How has the war changed the Ukrainian nation?

In his answers Professor Golovakha focused on the emergence in Ukraine during the war of new social orders and, accordingly, of new social groups and structures. He stressed that against the background of the horror Ukrainians have seen and lived through at the hands of the occupiers, our problems, including post-war ones, will be perceived by Ukrainians as ones that can, after all, be overcome.

The experience of previous wars, including the Second World War, must be studied in order to address our problems more adequately, including those that will arise from the return of Ukraine's occupied territories and the integration of their population into the Ukrainian mental space.

The category of justice (which is different for everyone) can be reinforced by the category of “law”, which will establish equal rights and duties for all. Trust in the authorities has grown considerably during the war, and so trust in the legislation those authorities adopt should grow too. Although Ukrainians have a tendency to rate the so-called strong leader highly, our history nevertheless shows that most of the country is not prepared to put up with absolute authoritarian rule.
