Popular science material by Yu. A. Hetman, Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology: “Motivations and challenges under conditions of full-scale war: the experience of postgraduate students in sociology”
The website of the Institute of Sociology of the NAS of Ukraine has published a popular science material by Yu. A. Hetman, Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology, "Motivations and challenges under conditions of full-scale war: the experience of postgraduate students in sociology"
The development of research is impossible without high-quality postgraduate training, so popularising it and supporting it institutionally and consistently is very much needed. Yet Ukrainian media rarely speak about postgraduate study, and mostly in the context of scandals and with a negative connotation. In recent years the information space has repeatedly been filled with loud stories along the lines of “six thousand dollars for a successful dissertation defence”, discussions of Oleksandr Usyk's dissertation defence, narratives about postgraduate study as a way of avoiding mobilisation, and dissertations on trivial or dubious topics. Such headlines create a simplified and distorted image of postgraduate study. Particularly triggering are claims that “people who go into postgraduate study are either eccentrics or… draft dodgers”. For they in effect discredit not only the institution itself but also thousands of postgraduate students across the country who, amid war, financial instability, blackouts and even an anticyclone, continue their research work.
