Politicians, government officials, public figures, journalists and researchers have constantly noted considerable social divisions among Ukraine's citizens in their attitudes towards the status of the Russian language and towards Ukraine's geopolitical European or Eurasian choice. The Russian military aggression that began in 2014 and in 2022 turned into a full-scale war of conquest by Russia against Ukraine coincides in time with major changes in Ukrainians' linguistic and geopolitical preferences.
