The website of the Institute of Sociology of the NAS of Ukraine has published a popular science material by Liudmyla Skokova, Doctor of Sociological Sciences, "Help with adaptation for war migrants from Ukraine in the Republic of Ireland: a case of national openness".

The Republic of Ireland has granted the status of beneficiary of temporary protection to more than 100,000 people fleeing the war in Ukraine (as of 14 March 2024, 105,032 people had acquired this status). Over two years this number has changed: some people have returned to Ukraine, some have moved on to other countries (Canada, the United States and others). Migrants who find themselves for a long period in social, economic and cultural conditions new to them must build an everyday life and resolve the daily questions that arise in another country. Some challenges are similar — getting used to a new climate, for instance, or to the local cuisine. A shared challenge, though a differentiated one (depending on the level of English), is the need to maintain communication in a foreign environment. Alongside this, specific challenges arise, for example, for the parents of school-age children, for whom a place must be found in a local school, sometimes while continuing online study at a Ukrainian one. Students of various ages who wish to do so enrol in Irish educational institutions, and for this they must make sense of the features and possibilities of the education system. Many refugees have physical and mental health problems, and to address these they must find their way around the specifics of the Irish health-care system.

In this piece we turn our attention to the possibilities of the social communication networks that help those fleeing the war in Ukraine to adjust to their new realities.
