Popular science material by Oleksandr Stehnii, Doctor of Sociological Sciences: “The sociology of water”
The website of the Institute of Sociology of the NAS of Ukraine has published a popular science material by Oleksandr Stehnii, Doctor of Sociological Sciences, "The sociology of water"
It is common knowledge that water is a vitally important natural resource for living organisms, including the human population. The water cycle in nature creates the climate in different localities and allows animals and plants to obtain the moisture they need to exist. Accounts of people who have found themselves in extreme situations show that without water the human body ceases to function within two to four days. It is no accident that since ancient times people settled along the banks of rivers and lakes and tried to build their homes as close to water as possible. The properties of water are studied by hydrochemistry as part of the natural sciences.
The main subject matter of sociology is social relations, social communities, social institutions, phenomena and processes, and the mechanisms of their interaction. Sociology essentially deals with three important tasks: observation, assessment and social action. Environmental sociology is devoted to translating these tasks into analysis and activity concerning ecological questions — in this case, the provision of water resources, above all of good-quality drinking water.
