A new book about Ukrainian society has been published in Germany. Its authors include researchers of the Institute of Sociology — Olena Symonchuk and Olena Strelnyk

13 April 2025

We are glad to report that in April 2025 the prestigious German publisher NOMOS brought out the book “Freiheitsschauplatz. Ein Gesellschaftsportrait der Ukraine” (“A theatre of freedom. A social portrait of Ukraine”), edited by Susann Worschech.

This is the first publication in the series “Interdisziplinäre Ukraine-Studien” (“Interdisciplinary Ukrainian studies”) launched by NOMOS, which is intended to acquaint European readers more deeply with contemporary Ukraine.

In the blurb the editor sets out the content and significance of the book as follows:

“Three revolutions in three decades, an active civil society and extraordinary resilience — Ukrainian society is striking in its dynamism and at the same time remains little known in Germany. Who are Ukrainians? How do they perceive themselves and their country in a European context? How did the transformations of the 1990s and the events after the Maidan affect Ukrainian society? What do integration into Europe and the years-long conflict with Russia mean for Ukrainians? In this book, the first German-language volume on the sociology of Ukraine, German and Ukrainian experts seek to explain Ukrainian society comprehensively.”

The print version of the book can be ordered on the publisher's website:

The good news is that the electronic version of the book is available in open access:
