CEU Press has published the collection Ukraine's Patronal Democracy and the Russian Invasion. The Russia-Ukraine War (Volume One). The editors and contributors — leading Ukrainian and foreign specialists — examine the possibilities of an anti-patronal transformation after the war. Its twelve chapters study the war's effect on patronal democracy, the relational economy, clientelist society and the geopolitical environment in which Ukraine operates. In particular, the chapter by Yevhen Golovakha, Kateryna Ivashchenko, Viktoriia Sereda and Oksana Mikheieva, “From patronalism to civic belonging”, examines changes in the dynamics of national-civic identity in Ukraine. The book is freely available on the CEU Press website: https://ceupress.com/book/ukraines-patronal-democracy-and-russian-invasion — in English, and also at https://www.academicstudiespress.com/9798887194318/ — in Ukrainian (Academic Studies Press). |

IBIDEM Press has published, in the series “Soviet and Post-Soviet Politics and Society”, the collective monograph “Eight Years After the Revolution of Dignity. What Has Changed in Ukraine during 2013–2021?”. The authors (Volodymyr Dubrovskyi, Kálmán Mizsei and Kateryna Ivashchenko) analyse the events of the Revolution of Dignity from a broad systemic perspective. The Euromaidan and the events that followed, in particular the country's resistance to Russian aggression, accelerated the westward reorientation of the economy, strengthened institutional mechanisms of checks and balances (for instance through decentralisation) and reinforced the role of modernising forces, especially civil society. To this day, however, despite certain progress, Ukraine's path towards implementing the principles of the rule of law remains problematic, and a substantial part of the economy remains rent-oriented. The authors reflect on the conditions necessary for the country's further modernising path of development. The foreword to the book was written by the well-known historian and commentator Yaroslav Hrytsak. The book can be consulted in the library of the Institute of Sociology or ordered from the website of Columbia University Press: https://shorturl.at/novxY |
