The collective work “Populist orientations in Ukrainian society” has been published

9 December 2024

Following the completion by the Department of Social and Political Processes of the Institute of Sociology of the NAS of Ukraine of the departmental research project “Citizens' populist orientations in a transitional society: features and formative factors”, the collective work “Populist orientations in Ukrainian society / academic ed. O. Reznik. Kyiv: Institute of Sociology of the NAS of Ukraine” has been published.

The global trend of widespread support for populism in many societies is associated with the ideological amorphousness of contemporary political life and with a crisis of identity caused by the processes of informatisation and the conflict of cultural stereotypes.

On the basis of a synthesis of contemporary theories and an analysis of the data of many empirical studies, the authors examine the phenomenon of populist orientations in Ukraine through the prism of its origins in a post-communist society. The team of authors (O. Reznik, O. Rakhmanov, A. Horbachyk, O. Kozlovskiy, O. Burova) identify the reasons why the long-standing prevalence of populist attitudes over the course of social transformations was able to translate into mass electoral behaviour only in 2019. Using an adapted measurement instrument, they study the features and the formative factors of populist orientations under conditions of full-scale war and restricted political life.

The book will be of use to academic sociologists, teachers, postgraduate students, students, representatives of the civic sector and public administrators.
