In memory of Valerii Pylypenko

It is with deep sorrow that we report that on 31 January 2024, at the age of 66, there passed away

Valerii Yevheniiovych Pylypenko

Doctor of Sociological Sciences, Professor, Chief Research Fellow of the Department of History and Theory of Sociology of the Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine

Almost forty years of Valerii Pylypenko's life were bound up with the academic research community: a path from postgraduate student at the Institute of Philosophy of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR to Chief Research Fellow of the Institute of Sociology of the NAS of Ukraine. The field of his research was economic sociology, the branch and special sociologies, and the history and theoretical-methodological problems of sociology. The author of more than 300 scholarly publications, of which more than 20 are monographs, Pylypenko made a weighty contribution to the establishment and development of sociology in Ukraine.

He was marked by wide-ranging research interests, large-scale critical thinking, a keen analytical mind and firmness, resolve and openness in debate. Pylypenko was an unchanging member of the Academic Council of the Institute of Sociology and of the specialised academic councils of a number of research institutions. He took an active part in expert work and peer review, appeared as an uncompromising but well-disposed opponent at public dissertation defences, was a member of many scholarly societies, research committees and centres, and served on the editorial boards of authoritative academic journals.

An exceptional personality — strikingly full of love for life, entirely optimistic, tempestuously energetic, a person who drove every process forward, a winner of verbal duels, irrepressibly resolute and restless, effective and productive, engaged and responsible, communicative and sincerely devoted to scholarship. That is how we knew Valerii Pylypenko and that is how we shall always remember him. May his memory be bright!

We express our condolences to his family, friends, loved ones, colleagues and students.

The funeral will take place on 3 February this year in the town of Horodyshche, Chernihiv region.

We shall keep the bright memory of a colleague, comrade and friend in our hearts.
