Support for democracy in Ukraine during the war

26 January 2023

The head of the department of socio-political processes of the Institute of Sociology of the NAS of Ukraine, Doctor of Sociological Sciences Oleksandr Reznik has published the article «Support for democracy in Ukraine during the war».

With the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 it was expected that, against the background of martial law, the centralisation of power and mass rallying around political leaders, public demand for an authoritarian order would grow. However, the results of the survey testify, on the contrary, to greater support for a democratic order and to a decline in support for authoritarianism. This optimism is, however, cautious rather than final. It has to be borne in mind that the survey was conducted in a situation where political life is not to the fore, and that it did not cover the occupied territories of Ukraine. Moreover, the socio-demographic characteristics of the respondents’ answers indicate the existence of insignificant, yet still real, differences by age, education, financial situation, language and region.
