Serhii Dembitskyi on positions in the war and confidence in victory
The latest video on the theme “Positions in the war and confidence in victory” by the Deputy Director of the Institute of Sociology of the NAS of Ukraine, Corresponding Member of the NAS of Ukraine, Doctor of Sociological Sciences Serhii Dembitskyi has been published on YouTube in the programme Academic Sociology UA.
The author begins his sociological analysis, based on the “Ukrainian Society” monitoring survey, by dividing attitudes towards positions in the war into 5 groups — from distinctly positive to distinctly negative — including an additional group of respondents with indeterminate positions, which are shaped by the general situation of the war.
To identify these attitudes, respondents were asked the following questions (indicators):
- How do you assess the results of Ukraine's military confrontation with Russia for Ukraine at present?
- In your view, which scenario is the war in Ukraine most likely to follow in the coming year?
- How do you assess the current capacities of Ukrainian society and the state in waging the war?
- In your view, how favourable is the international situation for Ukraine from the standpoint of waging the war?
- When Russia's war against Ukraine ends completely, who, in your view, will be in the more advantageous position?
The author analyses which demographic groups hold the most indeterminate positions, so as to give the authorities analytical and informational means for strengthening Ukrainians' confidence in victory. The sociologist distributed the groups as follows:
- by sex
- by age
- by type of settlement (size of the locality)
The author also analysed the factors that explain the direction of attitudes towards the country's position in the war:
- the presence or absence of anxiety about Ukraine's future
- expectations about the formation of an honest and competent government in the coming years
- assessment of international support for Ukraine towards victory in the war with Russia
- attitudes towards the functioning of the state
The concluding block of the analysis is a model demonstrating the chain by which attitudes towards the functioning of the state turn into attitudes towards the country's position in the war and are transformed into confidence in victory.
