Ukrainian Society During Wartime: Grassroots Resilience as a Mechanism for Social Transformation

Palgrave Macmillan, 2026

Editors: Alberto Veira-Ramos, Kateryna Ivashchenko-Stadnik, Tetiana Liubyva

How does Ukrainian society not merely withstand a full-scale war, but also change in the course of it? This is the subject of a collective monograph that brings together research by Ukrainian and international scholars. Its central idea is that social resilience is not limited to the capacity to endure shocks: it becomes a driver of change that originates at the level of communities, civil society and everyday practices.

What is the book about? Drawing on pre-war and wartime research, the authors analyse public attitudes, perceptions of the state, the role of decentralisation and local self-government, the transformation of civil society, the resilience of young people, social inclusion and language practices.

A special place is given to the findings of the “Ukrainian Society” monitoring survey of the Institute of Sociology of the NAS of Ukraine. The survey data, in particular, call into question the widespread notion of an ethnically divided Ukraine and show social unity in attitudes towards freedom of speech, the development of democracy and the integrity of the country, despite regional differences. Other chapters explain why particular communities proved more resilient than pre-war indicators would have suggested, and how cooperation between local authorities, citizens and organisations helps them respond to the crisis.

The scholarly value of the volume lies in its combination of quantitative and qualitative research, of pre-war and wartime data and of different theoretical approaches, as well as in the practical conclusions it offers. The book also raises methodological and ethical questions about conducting social research during a war, and draws lessons from the Ukrainian experience for other societies going through large-scale crises.

Ukraine in Transformation: From Soviet Republic to European Society

Palgrave Macmillan, 2020

Editors: Alberto Veira-Ramos, Tetiana Liubyva, Yevhen Golovakha

How did Ukraine change from a Soviet republic into a society oriented towards European values and institutions? This question is the subject of a collective monograph by Ukrainian and international researchers, which offers a sociological portrait of Ukrainian society over more than a quarter of a century: from 1991, when the independence of Ukraine was proclaimed, to 2018.

What is the book about? The authors trace changes in social values, in the social and class structure, in the educational and religious situation, in the media space, in civil society and in national identity. Particular attention is paid to the contradictions of institutional change, to the coexistence of the Soviet legacy with new social practices, and to the impact of the Revolution of Dignity and the war in Donbas.

One of the central questions of the volume is why the democratic aspirations of Ukrainian society were not always matched by corresponding changes in the work of state institutions. The studies reveal a complex and uneven dynamic of transformation, in which social values, institutional practices and social structures changed at different rates.

The scholarly value of the volume lies above all in its use of many years of data from the “Ukrainian Society” monitoring survey of the Institute of Sociology of the NAS of Ukraine, supplemented by other thematic qualitative and quantitative studies. This makes it possible not only to describe the changes of 1991–2018, but also to trace their underlying patterns and contradictions.

The book introduces an international academic audience to the findings of Ukrainian sociology for a period that is key to understanding present-day Ukraine, and offers an empirically grounded account of the country’s path from a post-Soviet to a European country.
