A seminar devoted to the problems of translation in the field of socio-humanitarian knowledge and to questions of scholarly and intercultural communication

Dear colleagues!

The department of methodology and methods of sociology of the Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine invites you to take part in a seminar devoted to the problems of translation in the field of socio-humanitarian knowledge and to questions of scholarly and intercultural communication.

The event will take place on 19 May 2023 online and will be timed to Europe Day in Ukraine.

The seminar proposes to discuss the following questions:

1. The history of translation thought. The first attempts to translate scholarly sources. Translations of works on social science topics.

2. The specific features of translating and editing scholarly, popular-science and journalistic materials in the field of the social sciences and the humanities. Lexical and grammatical difficulties in translating terms and linguistic constructions, the translator’s «false» friends. Machine translation programmes: how far are they able to help?

3. The translation and adaptation of tests, questionnaires and projective techniques: what challenges do researchers most often face?

4. One’s own experience of translating scholarly articles and monographs and journalistic texts from English (or other foreign languages) into Ukrainian and from Ukrainian into English or other foreign languages.

5. One’s own experience of giving presentations at international academic conferences and of taking part in international research projects.

6. The specific features of business communication and networking with researchers from other countries.

7. Ways of integrating Ukrainian researchers into the European and global research space.

Both specialists in the social sciences and the humanities (philosophy, sociology, psychology and others) and students mastering these fields of knowledge, as well as translators, may join the seminar.

The approximate length of each participant’s presentation is 10–15 minutes.

Those interested in taking part are asked to send an application to the moderator (Olha Maksymenko) by 15 May 2023. The texts of the presentations will be accepted until 20 June.

The application to participate should state (in Ukrainian and English): the title of the presentation, the author’s surname and given name, position, place of work, academic (or educational) degree and academic title, as well as an email address, telephone number and ORCID (if available).

The abstracts of the papers will be published in the journal «Sociology: Theory, Methods, Marketing».

Requirements for the material: length — up to 8 thousand characters (in Ukrainian or English), font — Times New Roman 14, paragraph indent — 1.25 cm, alignment — to the left margin, line spacing — 1.5. The list of sources used is to be formatted according to the style of the American Psychological Association (APA).
