Sociological metatheorising: history and the present

The monograph presents the results of research into the history and the present state of metatheorising in sociology. It examines the specific features of the genesis of sociological metatheorising in the 1950s–1970s, its specification, legitimation and institutionalisation in the 1980s–1990s, and sociologists’ contemporary metatheoretical inquiries after 2000. It analyses the philosophical dimensions of metatheorising in sociology, the metaparadigmatic structure of contemporary sociological knowledge, the global experience and local specifications of general sociological theorising, and the main metatheoretical perspectives and research programmes of contemporary sociology. The proposed generalisations of world experience and of the achievements of sociological metatheorising will help towards a deeper grasp of the theoretical diversity and development trends of sociology, will contribute to expanding the conceptual compatibility of sociological research in Ukraine, and to raising the heuristic potential of sociological theorising in interpreting and conceptualising the social processes and phenomena observed in Ukrainian society over recent decades.
