Ukrainian sociologists on NV's list “People of the decade”

17 May 2024

NV magazine has named 100 Ukrainians who have shaped life in the country and driven it forward since 2014. The magazine made its selection in three stages:

  1. It approached 47 experts from various fields — military figures, volunteers, businesspeople, top managers, opinion leaders, cultural figures and journalists — and asked them to name the Ukrainians who, in their view, have shaped the country's history from 2014 to the present. Those surveyed could name any of their compatriots except themselves. In the end the experts named 175 people to NV.
  2. At the same time the editors launched a survey on the NV.UA website, in which any reader of the site could name outstanding compatriots worthy of being called People of the Decade. This produced a further list of 207 people.
  3. Drawing on these two lists and taking their own view into account, the members of NV's editorial board formed the final list of 100 people of the decade.

The editors deliberately did not rank those on the list by the number of votes they received or by their degree of influence on the course of history, but grouped them by field of activity and alphabetically. The two surveys, however, gave the most expert votes to five Ukrainians: the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi; the writer Serhii Zhadan; the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine Mykhailo Fedorov; Ukraine's Ambassador to the United Kingdom and former Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Valerii Zaluzhnyi; and the commander of the “Da Vinci Wolves” battalion Dmytro Kotsiubailo, who died tragically at the front last year.

In the category “Society”, two representatives of Ukrainian academic sociology made the list of 100, presented by the magazine as follows:

  • Iryna Bekeshkina (1952−2020), was the director of the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation, a sociologist of impeccable professional reputation
  • Yevhen Golovakha, Director of the Institute of Sociology of the NAS of Ukraine, an authoritative sociologist, psychologist and philosopher

Incidentally, Yevhen Golovakha, like other well-known Ukrainian sociologists — Volodymyr Paniotto, Director General of the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, and Oleksii Antypovych, director of the Rating Sociological Group — was chosen by the magazine as a member of its Expert Council.
