A Ukrainian sociologist in the TOP-100 most influential Ukrainians of 2024

27 August 2024

The August 2024 issue of NV magazine (No. 5) published, to mark Independence Day, its traditional ranking “TOP-100 most influential Ukrainians”. Drawing on the proposals of its Expert Council, the editors formed the final hundred from 120 nominees. It includes 33 politicians and public officials, 33 businesspeople and company CEOs, 20 military figures and volunteers, 11 scholars and figures from the humanitarian sphere, 9 cultural figures, 5 athletes and 1 religious figure.

Experts could name anyone they considered worthy of the hundred except themselves. So the member of the Expert Council, the Director of the Institute of Sociology, Corresponding Member of the NAS of Ukraine, Doctor of Philosophical Sciences Yevhen Golovakha is, so to speak, not implicated in the fact that his name made the coveted hundred — which means that other experts and the editors of NV decided so.

By place of birth the most influential Ukrainians of 2024 break down as follows: 19 from Kyiv, 12 from the Dnipropetrovsk region, 9 from Lviv, 6 each from Odesa, Kharkiv and Zhytomyr, 5 from Ternopil, 4 from Crimea, 3 each from Transcarpathia and Donetsk, and the rest scattered. The only region that produced no one among the most influential this year is Chernivtsi.

Among the scholars, Yevhen Golovakha's company includes the historian Yaroslav Hrytsak and the demographer Ella Libanova, both well known to the public.

The editors noted that the publication took the liberty of ranking those included by degree of influence, allowing for the possibility of error, though not a fatal one. Fatal ones there may not be, but there are some rather illogical ones. How else can one explain, for instance, that the head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, Metropolitan Epiphanius, who influences millions of Ukrainians, believers and not only, is placed at No. 35, while the world-famous artist Ivan Marchuk, included by the British in the ranking “100 geniuses of our time”, comes in the current NV ranking at No. 100.

Let us congratulate Yevhen Golovakha on the fact that his name in the “TOP-100…” ranking symbolises the successes of Ukrainian academic sociology and the achievements of the Institute of Sociology of the NAS of Ukraine that he heads, and let us note that the laureate himself considers more than one of his colleagues worthy of inclusion in this list.
