O. Reznik, Doctor of Sociological Sciences: «Ukrainians' choice…»

The head of the Department of Social and Political Processes of the Institute of Sociology of the NAS of Ukraine, Doctor of Sociological Sciences Oleksandr Reznik, has published the article «Ukrainians' choice between freedom and security during the war».

People's choice between freedom and security in wartime can be very difficult and depends on many factors, such as personal values, individual convictions, cultural traditions and the threat of violence or death at the hands of enemies. Given this, some people may give preference to security, agreeing to be restricted in their rights and freedoms in order to preserve their own lives and the lives of those close to them. Other people give preference to freedom and are not prepared to be restricted in anything.

It turned out that despite the war and despite mortal danger, the number of people oriented towards freedom has been preserved among Ukrainians and has even grown compared with the pre-war period. It is evident that, despite the full-scale war, the values of freedom and security remain components of a coherent political worldview and of political socialisation rather than involuntary reactions to external stimuli. For the fact that there are differences by age, education, economic position and settlement in the choice between security and freedom even during a war points to the social character of the formation of these values.
