Remembering Oleksandr Vyshniak
The website of the Fastiv city council has published a report with numerous photographs under the title “The outstanding sociologist Yevhen Golovakha visits Fastiv”. It reports: “The Fastiv community was visited by one of the leading intellectuals of our time, the leader of Ukraine's sociological science Yevhen Ivanovych Golovakha, to share his recollections and to speak about his friend — the well-known Ukrainian sociologist and native of Fastiv, Oleksandr Ivanovych Vyshniak.”
The name of Oleksandr Vyshniak (1956–2019) is well known to Ukraine's sociological community. He was a distinguished Ukrainian sociologist, founder of the Sotsiovymir Centre for Social and Political Research, one of the founders of electoral sociology in Ukraine and the author of numerous studies of Ukrainians' political attitudes.
The meeting with Oleksandr Vyshniak's fellow townspeople, attended by his brother Vitalii, took place within the Club of Elite Meetings in the format of an open discussion, in which searching questions were asked about ethics in sociology, the boundary between scholarship and politics, the specifics of electoral sociology and the role of sociological research in contemporary society.
Those taking part, among them young people from Fastiv Academic Lyceum No. 1 — the very school where Oleksandr Vyshniak studied and which he successfully completed — listened with interest to the recollections of their distinguished guest from the capital about their celebrated fellow townsman and learned about the pressing problems of contemporary sociological science.
During the event, which took place in a warm and informal atmosphere, the valuable scholarly volume “A philosophy of life: the sociology of Oleksandr Vyshniak” was presented to the Fastiv State Museum of Local Lore, the Fastiv city library, and the museum and library of Fastiv Academic Lyceum No. 1.
The meeting testified to the desire of the Sociological Association of Ukraine and of the leadership of the Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine to promote the names of Ukrainian sociologists and their contribution to the development of the country's scholarship, and to acquaint the public, young people included, with the scholarly achievements and the lives of the field's leading specialists.
