Meeting with Volodymyr Paniotto

On 18 March 2024 the Doctoral Students’ Club met Volodymyr Illich Paniotto, Ukrainian sociologist, Doctor of Philosophical Sciences, Director General of the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, Professor at the Department of Sociology of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.

The meeting was devoted to a highly topical subject — “Problems of quantitative research in wartime: difficulties in constructing a sample, the particulars of conducting surveys, and the specifics of analysing the results”. Sociological research matters enormously, yet carrying it out in such conditions is very hard for many reasons: reduced funding, the absence of a population census, security problems in the occupied and front-line areas, questions about trust in the data obtained, and technical difficulties. Nothing, however, is impossible, and the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) under Volodymyr Illich demonstrates this vividly. Mr Paniotto himself is convinced that opinion surveys during the war are vitally necessary.

The meeting with Volodymyr Paniotto inspired the doctoral students to work more actively on their own research projects and to take the technical and methodological aspects of research in wartime more seriously.
