The monograph presents several silhouettes of the coevals of the state's Independence — those born at the beginning of the 1990s. It traces the outlines given to them by differences of social origin, and by the time and the events of extraordinary general significance and individual importance. It shows how they came to understand — in no single, universal way — the movement of history and their own place within it. The introduction estimates the size of the birth cohort of 1991 and characterises, in the most general terms, the socio-economic conditions of its primary socialisation. The first chapter considers the sociological interpretation of a generation; the second, the differences and the distinctive features of the coevals of independent Ukraine; the third, their participation in the events of 2013–2014 — the Maidan and the war in the east of the country. The empirical basis consists of data from comparative international surveys, from the monitoring survey of the Institute of Sociology of the NAS of Ukraine, and from online surveys carried out on their own initiative by the staff of the Department of Sociology of the Faculty of History of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, together with the authors' own materials obtained through their participation in various scholarly and historical-biographical projects.

The book should be of interest to specialists in the humanities and social sciences who study the problems of youth, to experts in social policy, and to students and postgraduate students of the speciality "054 — Sociology".
