The problem of social class is one of the central problems of sociology and, at the same time, a constantly debated one — with regard both to the definition of the concept of class and
to its role in social theory and its significance for the sociological analysis of post-industrial society. The book sets out the theoretical foundations of six
alternative approaches to class analysis in contemporary sociology, presented by the leading figures of the respective traditions. In the conclusion, E. O. Wright (who initiated and edited this collective monograph) offers a conceptual synthesis of the approaches under analysis on the basis of six key questions, the ways of resolving which account for the differences between the corresponding class conceptions.

This book, first published in English in 2005, gained wide recognition over the following decade and was included in the curricula of many universities. Its translation is addressed both to specialists in class analysis and to students and postgraduate students of sociology.
