About the publication

The global trend of widespread support for populism in many societies is linked to the ideological amorphousness of modern political life and the identity crisis caused by computerization processes and the conflict of cultural stereotypes. Based on the synthesis of contemporary theories and the analysis of data from numerous empirical studies, the authors examined the phenomenon of populist orientations in Ukraine through the prism of its origins in a post-communist society. The authors identified the reasons why the prolonged prevalence of populist sentiments throughout social transformations was able to manifest as mass electoral behavior only in 2019. Using an adapted measurement methodology, the features of manifestation and the factors shaping populist orientations under the conditions of full-scale war and restrictions on political life were investigated.

The monograph is the result of the departmental research project "Populist Orientations of Citizens in a Transitional Society: Features of Manifestation and Factors of Formation" (0122U001157), carried out by the Department of Socio-Political Processes of the Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The book will be useful for academic sociologists, lecturers, postgraduate students, students, representatives of the civil sector, and public administrators.
