The book sets out an economic-sociological understanding of innovative development from the standpoint of the Schumpeterian approach and of a comparative analysis of the Ukrainian economy alongside the innovative economies of the contemporary world. It distinguishes the structural components of the social potential of innovative economic development (IED): the socio-political, socio-economic, institutional, socio-cultural, scientific and educational sub-potentials. Drawing on the results of an expert survey of theorists and practitioners in the field of Ukrainian innovation policy, it assesses the level and the significance of the social potential and of its components in the innovative development of the domestic economy. The principal social barriers and obstacles on the way to realising IED in Ukraine are identified. The prospects of IED in Ukraine are analysed and specific recommendations for securing it are proposed. The book presents the results of the first survey ever conducted in Ukraine among the heads of enterprises and organisations in the nanotechnology sector of the economy.
