Department of Sociology of Culture and Mass Communication
About the unit
The Department of Sociology of Culture and Mass Communication has existed since the establishment of the Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Its first head, in 1990, was the prominent Ukrainian sociologist Doctor of Philosophical Sciences, Professor Anatolii Ruchka. From 2007 the Department was chaired by Doctor of Sociological Sciences, Professor Nataliia Kostenko.
The Department focuses on comprehensive research into social and cultural development, using quantitative and qualitative analysis of sociological data. Since the nineties its researchers have studied the social and cultural differentiation of modern Ukrainian society, which has a contradictory influence on social transformation, being shaped by structural and status determinants and by global and local cultural factors, among them group and individual cultural preferences. Personal involvement in culture is studied through demographic and status characteristics in relation to values and meanings, as well as through the subcultural segmentation of the population, cultural identities, typologies of media consumption, and the social and cultural dynamics of recent decades.
The Department also carries out research outside its planned programme on the sphere of values, modern media, and communication and cultural practices; it cooperates with cultural institutions and non-governmental organisations and presents its findings through the mass media.
